What is resin bound?

Resin bound paving combines natural aggregate, marbled or recycled material (stone) and a high-quality clear resin binder. A thorough mixing ensures the stone is fully coated in resin and ‘bound’ together, producing a 3D matrix. During the laying process, minute voids mimic natural drainage by allowing water to pass through. SureSet permeable paving delivers a smooth, durable surface that needs very little maintenance, sweeping and occasional power washing to avoid debris build-up and prevent moss or algae growth. Our resin bound gravel is fully permeable, meeting the requirements of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDs). Even when applied to a non-permeable base, the permeability of SureSet allows water to be harvested or discharged into drains or soak-aways. Resin bound differs from resin bonded, whereby a thin resin layer is applied to the surface, and aggregate is scattered on top.

What's the difference between a resin bound driveway and a resin bonded driveway?

Resin bound and resin bonded are different surfacing methods that are commonly mistaken for each other. Resin bonded is where a resin adhesive is rolled across the top of a dense surface and aggregates are scattered on top that adhere to the glue. We do not recommend Resin bonded for driveways as it is not as durable as Resin Bound for vehicle traffic especially where turning occurs. Resin bound is where both the aggregates and the resin are combined in a vertical forced action mixer, levelled and hand trowelled on to a suitable base. Resin bound Paving is typically laid at 18mm depth over a good prepared sub base and is durable enough to withstand vehicle traffic.

Resin Bound is used predominantly as pathway material and since the development in Resin Bound has decreased in its popularity.

How are Resin Bound Paving Products permeable?

During the mixing process, each piece of high-quality aggregate stone is completely coated in clear polyurethane resin creating an ultra-strong bond that makes the mixture highly durable but porous through minute voids to drain through to the sub-base.

Are Resin Bound Products easy to clean?

Yes, they are!. There’s no loose stone with our resin bound gravel making it easy to look after. Regular sweeping and occasional power washing will keep it looking fresh. A domestic jet washer can then be used to ensure the surface is free of dirt and grime.

What groundworks and base preparation do we need to undertake?

Good groundworks and preparations are essential before installing resin bound paving. Lovelock Landscapes and its suppliers have designed and tested specifications for different applications. When laid in line with these specifications we can offer a 21 year supplier guarantee.

What are the depths of the resin and groundwork’s?

The depth of our Resin Bound Paving varies for each project, depending on the application, size of the stone, and substrate its being laid onto. The average approximate ‘typical’ depth is 18mm.

There are various base options for Resin Bound Paving including asphalt, concrete, SureCell and even compacted MOT Type 1. The base specification is decided on site conditions and the application you are using it for.

How much does a resin bound paving installation cost?

Each project is individually designed and the price will depend on the location, area size, application type and stone choice.

Can you lay over an existing base?

Absolutely! When it comes to enhancing your space with resin bound paving, you may wonder if it’s feasible to lay it over an existing asphalt or concrete base. Well, the answer is yes, it can be done, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. Several key factors come into play, such as how you plan to use the area, the current condition and strength of the base, and whether it’s compatible with your chosen resin bound system. Additionally, factors like thickness, preparation, and drainage need to be considered. We highly recommend seeking professional advice if you’re thinking about utilising an existing base. Proper surface preparation is crucial to ensure a successful installation that stands the test of time. Can weeds grow through resin bound driveways?

Weeds are not supposed to grow through resin bound driveways if the correct weed membrane has been used. However, seedlings can germinate on top of the surface from seed dispersal. Resin bound is weed resistant but not weed free. It is best to prevent seedlings germinating with a mild weed killer.

Is a resin bound driveway slippery?

Your new resin bound surface will not be slippy. Our installations are anti-skid and suitable for a number of uses including sloping driveways and DDA ramps.

Do resin bound surfaces stain easily?

Resin bound surfaces are stain resistant. Stains like oil can be cleaned off without effecting the surface. Further details are shown in our maintenance guide.

Can resin bound surfaces be repaired?

Resin surfaces can be repaired but it depends on the extent of the damage and if any base works are required. We have to assess the damage caused and survey the works. If you have had a resin bound installation that has been installed by others and you aren’t happy please contact us and we can assist. We have written professional independent witness reports for clients and insurance companies.

Who installs my resin bound project?

Your project will be handled all in house by our dedicated, DBS Enhanced Checked, trained staff. You will have one contact from the initial meeting who will project manage your installation through to hand over.
